JOB TITLE:   

Assistant Director, Campus Recreation

This position involves on-call status. 

JOB PURPOSE:

Campus Recreation is looking for a candidate to assist the Director with the operational, financial and personnel functions of the Campus Recreation Department. This position will report to the Director and provide strategic support and leadership in advancing the mission and goals of Campus Recreation through our Recreational Sports program area. This position will oversee Recreational Sports, which includes Intramural and Club Sports, and supervise two other full-time staff positions. Overseeing Recreational Sports includes but is not limited to managing sports programs and events, training sport officials, helping manage assigned program budgets, and working with other community representatives to best optimize the Recreational Sports benefit to UW students and the campus community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage a comprehensive Recreational Sports program which includes Intramural Sports and Club Sports. 
  • Recruit, train, and supervise Rec Sports staff including, but not limited to: office staff, club sport coaches, club leaders, Intramural officials and supervisors.
  • Develop and ensure adherence to Rec Sports policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with others in Campus Recreation, UW Athletics and the City of Laramie to coordinate and reserve indoor and outdoor facilities for Rec Sports programs.
  • Supervise a variety of activities and student travel that may occur on evenings and weekends.
  • Coordinate marketing for the Rec Sports program including design and publication of materials and oversight of website design and maintenance.
  • Assist the Director and Associate Director with the operational, financial and personnel functions for the Campus Recreation department.
  • Act as the Director in the Director and Associate Director's absence, as assigned.
  • Manage the assigned budgets including budget development, authorizing/rejecting and tracking expenditures, and forecasting costs for the Rec Sports program.
  • Provide assistance with strategic planning for the Campus Recreation department.
  • Gather data, compile information, and prepare reports as assigned.
  • Provide immediate response to problems and emergency situations affecting normal operations.
  • Coordinate safety training for Campus Recreation employees. 
  • Oversee and mentor two full-time staff in the Rec Sports department.
  • Assist with organization and management of travel for Club Sports teams.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  • May serve on department and University committees.
  • Research new technology for Campus Recreation areas and equipment, and make equipment purchase recommendations.
  • Provide leadership development opportunities for program leaders.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Attend and participate in training and other professional development activity.
  • Participate in performance-related goal setting and achievement to meet personal and organizational goals and objectives.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY: 

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

Education: Bachelor's degree

Experience:  At least 2 years work-related experience

Required licensure, certification, registration or other requirements: 

  • CPR and First Aid certification or ability to obtain within first 3 months of employment
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification or ability to obtain within first 3 months of employment
  • Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Master’s degree
  • At least 2 years full-time work-related experience
  • Experience overseeing Club Sports
  • Experience overseeing Intramural Sports
  • Certified official in one or more of the following: football, basketball, or soccer
  • Experience training and mentoring sports officials
  • Experience supervising, training and evaluating student staff
  • Experience administering large-scale recreation events/competitions
  • Wide ranging experience with recreational sports programming
