Job Title: Counselor 

Dates: Arrive in Sitka on Tuesday, June 11th and depart on Monday, July 15th. Counselors may also indicate on their application that they would like to be considered for a position at Musical Theater Camp (depart Monday, August 5). 

Camp operates on a 7-day per week schedule. 

Compensation:    

  • Room on Campus from the arrival day through the morning of the departure day
  • Board on Campus from the arrival day through breakfast on the departure day 
  • $2,000 (additional stipend amount for those who are hired for Musical Theater Camp)

Travel: Counselors are responsible for their own travel.

Supervision: Director of Students 

Minimum Qualifications: At least 20 years of age by June 11, 2024

Position Description:

SFAC's Camp Counselors are an integral part of the campers' experience and provide support for students to grow as people and artists at camp. This job provides extraordinary experience for people interested in careers in teaching or other arts education fields. Counselors are responsible for a variety of tasks throughout the summer including student supervision and support, leading recreational activities, ensuring a safe environment for all students at camp, helping to keep dorms clean and sanitary, assisting in classes, and helping with campus setup, turnover, and cleanup. Counselors are expected to be helpful, responsible, and flexible members of the camp team and the ideal candidate is willing to assist in campus duties as needed with an enthusiastic and energetic attitude. All SFAC staff are expected to provide excellent customer service to all members of the campus community and to each other

Specific Position Duties:

  • Provide supervision of students during times that they are not in classes: at meals, during recreation, in dormitories, at off-campus activities.       
  • Provide organized recreational activities for students each day according to schedule.
  • Understand and adhere to all camp rules and Fine Arts Campus rules.
  • Exhibit role-model behavior around all students.
  • Maintain a safe environment for all students by anticipating inter-student conflict, ensuring equitable enforcement of rules, and observing proactive safety procedures (e.g. emergency protocols, first aid, fire drills, van transportation).
  • Oversee security, safety and comfort in dormitories. To reside in the dormitory and to provide guidance to a small group of assigned students. To assist with room check-in, check-out and clean-up.
  • Assist students who are upset, homesick or overwhelmed by Camp. To listen with empathy and to advocate for the needs of students. To refer students with continuing issues or acute problems to the Director of Students.
  • Participate in other Camp activities on a rotational basis with other counselors: meal supervision, class assistance, evening programs, transportation, cleaning, other activities.
  • Assist with campus, classroom, and dorm set-up, turnover days, and campus, classroom, and dorm cleanup.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Counselors are expected to maintain a drug, tobacco, and alcohol free environment while supervising students and will not store drugs, tobacco, or alcohol on campus.
  • Counselors help to create an inclusive environment on campus where students feel physically and emotionally safe. They are expected to be accepting of the diverse racial, national, religious, cultural, political, and LGBTQ+ backgrounds of campers, and not seek to impose their own particular views.
  • All SFAC employees must be up-to-date on their COVID-19 vaccinations.
