JOB SUMMARY:

The Camp Medic will assist the Culture Camp Manager with the Calista Education and Culture, Inc. Cultural Immersion Camps. This position is subject to funding availability and expected to last until approximately September 2024 or longer.

This position will assist with the Cultural Immersion Camps that provide an opportunity for 7th and 8th grade students along with first year teachers to learn Yup’ik/Cupik cultural skills, traditions, history, values, subsistence hunting, fishing, and harvesting activities from Elders and camp staff from the Kuskokwim and the Coastal region of the Yukon-Kuskokwim (YK) Delta. In addition to practicing leadership roles, they will also learn why it is important to protect and respect wildlife and habitat in the Calista region. The camp will be located near Toksook Bay (two camps), and Quinhagak (one camp), AK in the summer of 2024.

This position will share information at the Cultural Immersion Camp with participants. 

  • Learn about Yup’ik “way of life”.
  • Acquire subsistence skills and knowledge necessary to become self-sufficient, prepared to take care of their families as well as the broader village community.
  • Learn traditional values, reconnecting them with the culture and, as a result, helping to continue the Yup’ik way of life.
  • Appreciate how hard work accompanies success as a leader, hunter, fisherman and gatherer.
  • Develop a sense of respect and care for their natural surroundings.
  • Understand and practice the virtues of sharing and cooperation.
  • See how humor and play are so important to subsistence activities.
  • Learn the importance of humility during subsistence activities.
  • Grow in their understanding of life’s spiritual connectedness, and how that connectedness impacts their success as a leader, hunter, fisherman and gatherer, as well as their ability “to be full” as a human being.
  • Understanding their role in the Yup’ik “way of doing things” and develop a sense of responsibility to the culture’s continuation.
  • Develop an understanding that they will play a role in protecting wildlife and habitat in the Calista region.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Ensure camp is aligned with the Organization’s mission, vision, goals, and objectives.
  • Participate in the orientation meeting for staff and student participants. The meeting should provide information about Cultural Immersion Camp activities, and review Cultural Immersion Camp Safety Policies and Rules, including the Culture Camp Code of Conduct, Emergency Plan, and COVID-19 Mitigation Plan. 
  • Assist in monitoring and enforcing the Cultural Immersion Camp Rules and Safety, and reviews information during daily meetings.
  • Share with the Camp Manager during staff training, health concerns and procedures for which the staff shall need advice and training.
  • The Camp Medic will administer health care for all members of the Cultural Immersion Camp community throughout the camping season.
  • Provide 24-hour health care coverage and stand available for emergencies, illness, and coordinate transport of patient to clinic.
  • Administer prescription medications as directed.
  • Dispense over the counter medications as appropriate.
  • Keep the medical area clean and organized.
  • Maintain records, daily log and treatment book and insurance claim provisions constant with the provisions of law and established standards.
  • Maintain medical equipment, supplies and medicines in accordance with established practices.
  • Provide the Culture Camp Manager with daily reports on sickness concerns and accidents.
  • Ensures the Culture Camp Manager is continually informed of the conditions and operations of the Cultural Immersion Camp.
  • Assists Culture Camp Manager on the logistics of Cultural Immersion Camp operations and functions.
  • Ensures the planned activities for the Cultural Immersion Camp are administered and monitored.
  • Assists in the supervision of students in the Cultural Immersion Camp.
  • Participates in the set up and clean-up of Cultural Immersion Camp.
  • Evaluates and provides suggestions for future Cultural Immersion Camps.

SUPERVISORY FUNCTIONS:

Although this position does not supervise immediate project staff, when the Culture Camp Manager and the Assistant Camp Manager are not available to supervise students in the Cultural Immersion Camp, the Camp Medic will supervise as necessary.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Experience in working in direct patient healthcare.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate, supervise and work with assigned ages and skill levels and provide necessary instruction.
  • Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to aquatic and land-based emergencies and situations requiring first aid.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Certification in minimum Emergency Medical Technician and CPR.
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. 
  • Valid state driver’s license and be qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of Calista Education and Culture’s Driving Policy.
  • Ability to pass drug and background screening: criminal, Office of Children’s Services, and sex offender registry.
  • Ability to speak Yup’ik/Cup’ik preferred, but not required.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Extensive travel to rural and remote areas of Alaska. Work and reside in a rural and remote Alaska campsite for most of the summer. Adaptability regarding schedule and task changes is necessary to accommodate changing priorities.  Overtime may be required.
