Job Description

Our Lewiston Idaho facility is looking for a Chemistry Department Manager to efficiently and effectively manage the Chemistry Department utilizing servant leadership methodologies as a foundation of the management application. Oversee and lead hourly production workers who process initiating explosives for primer and rimfire charging. Responsible for safely meeting production requirements for priming mixes, producing a high-quality product, while balancing raw material and chemical inventories, managing a department budget, and ensuring the department is abiding by all DOD safety regulations. Responsible for training activities in production area and ensuring that all SOPs are up-to-date and accurate. The department manager will maintain appropriate staffing levels and hire hourly employees to support department objectives. Further responsibilities will include ordering chemicals and maintaining production raw materials for explosive manufacture. Responsible for scheduling maintenance and repairs to process equipment, and facility which includes four explosive production buildings and numerous bunkers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

(Experience, education, licenses, certifications, and specific knowledge, skills and abilities required for the position.)

  • 2-year degree in manufacturing/operations leadership or 4+ years’ experience as a leader in a manufacturing environment in lieu of degree. Experience in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering, Physics, Explosives and/or Energetics is desired but not required.
  • Computer skills including Word, Excel, and familiarity with databases.
  • Must have demonstrated strong organizational skills and strong work ethic.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

(Fundamental duties necessary to achieve the objective of the position)

  • Manage explosive production in a safe environment: direct, coordinate, schedule and supervise explosive operation from raw material receiving to delivery of priming mix composition to charging departments.
  • Update ISO and related items including PPSs, SOPs and work instructions on a regular basis
  • Manage and coordinate the maintenance and repair of equipment and facility used for explosive production and processing. Seek improved equipment to keep these operations modern and efficient.
  • Prepare annual department budget for raw materials, labor, efficiency and overhead and manage operations within this plan. Order and schedule chemicals and ensure timely delivery including overseas shipments. Ensure that receiving procedures meet ISO requirements.
  • Hire, train, manage, counsel and review performance of hourly chemical worker. Maintain an efficient, safe, and flexible workforce of hourly workers.
  • Consult and coordinate with Manufacturing Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Safety, Quality, and Manufacturing departments concerning explosive technologies.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION

Physical Requirements: Employee will be sitting the majority of the time, with some walking and standing. Minor lifting objects over 10 lbs., carrying, stooping, and kneeling to access books and reports, transport paperwork and materials, and to retrieve files. Some local travel and work outdoors. Manual dexterity for extensive computer work and writing. Hearing, speaking, and vision are required (with or without correction).

Mental Requirements: Must communicate effectively in verbal and written formats. Reading comprehension and basic math skills are a requirement. Flexibility to effectively deal with a variety of people and situations and to handle interruptions and multiple tasks simultaneously. Quick thinking and problem solving to readily assimilate information. Ability to maintain tact and highly professional manners. Initiative to effectively complete tasks with little supervision. The ability to identify and appropriately handle confidential information.

Equipment Used: Telephone, calculator, personal computer, copy machine, fax machine, and printer.

Working Environment: Work is done in an office environment, with some time spent in the manufacturing plant. This exposure subjects incumbents to temperature changes, dirt, dust, noise, vibration, moving objects and mechanical parts, machine tool lubricant mists, equipment and explosive hazards. Co-worker support, guidance and reinforcement are readily available.
