The salary range for this position will be truncated as of April 1, 2024, which will impact the minimum salary for this classification. The new salary range on April 1, 2024 will be $ 3,218.00 -$ 3,948.00 monthly.

In this dynamic role, you'll lead a variety of engaging activities, from interpretive presentations to outdoor recreation, all while promoting beach safety and conservation efforts. Collaborate with our dedicated team to inspire visitors and ensure a memorable experience in the stunning Sunset Bay Management Unit.

What you will do:

This program focuses on coordinating and providing support for a broad range of programmed activities including interpretation, education, outreach and outdoor recreation that applies to the Sunset Bay Management Unit. The program is guided by the agencies goals to providing safe public access, protecting cultural and natural resources, increasing public awareness and education of beach safety for the provision of great visitor experience. As a Rocky Shores Education Specialist, you will share your knowledge and enthusiasm with visitors with the guidance provided by the Ocean Shores Core Team.

  • Assist with the administration and implementation of visitor-focused presentations on Ocean Shore topics including but not limited to rocky intertidal, outdoor recreation, history, beach safety, habitat restoration and conservation.

  • Coordinate and perform informal and formal roving interpretation within park and beach settings.

  • Effectively and professionally communicate Oregon State Park goals, messaging and Agency brand.

  • Assist with outreach to local recreation groups and communities.

  • Project assistance related to safe and memorable visitor experiences.

  • Organizing, maintaining and transporting program supplies and equipment.

  • Occasional support of and assistance with additional Visitor Experience programs and projects.

  • Inform visitors of park rules and regulations.

  • Work with a variety of OPRD office staff, field staff and with park volunteers to ensure consistency in operational procedures, projects and communication.

  • Support staff and volunteers in emergency response to visitor injury incidents

Minimum Qualifications:

  • One year of experience in Public Contact (such as a Public Service Representative, Salesperson, or Receptionist) which included answering questions and providing information.

Special Requirements:

  • To be hired, you must have a criminal records and driving records check that meets OPRD Criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment.

  • You must have a valid driver’s license at the time of hire and throughout employment

  • Educational background in parks, interpretation, environmental education, outdoor recreation or tourism preferred.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with visitors through public speaking, listening and writing.

  • Experience working in one or more of the following program areas: interpretation, outdoor skills instruction, outdoor recreation, environmental education, partnerships, and special events.

  • Specialized skills in developing and safely leading outdoor recreation presentations such as hiking, tide pooling and birding.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products required.

  • Ability to multi-task on a variety of ongoing simultaneous projects. Independence, creativity and resourcefulness are necessary in this position.

  • Must be willing to communicate openly, ask questions, accept positive criticism, and work as part of a dynamic team.

  • The salary listed is at the non-PERS rate. Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) eligible employees will have their base salary increased by 6.95% and pay the 6% employee contribution to PERS.
