The Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas is the Catholic Church in Northeast Kansas: Growing as Disciples of Jesus; Making Disciples for Jesus. Prairie Star Ranch is seeking to hire a temporary full-time Assistant Horse Wrangler, which is responsible for camper experience and safety in every aspect of the summer horse program at Prairie Star Ranch.  The position includes coordinating with the Prairie Star Ranch Equestrian Manager to provide safe and fun trail rides, while helping to care for the herd, corrals, and trails. This position is on-site, will average 35 hours per week and requires the ability to work evenings and weekends as needed. This position will approximately last from May 20, 2024 – July 29, 2024.


 Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct safe trail rides and instructing campers how to participate in horse activities in a safe manner.
  • Responsible for the care and safety of the herd and the maintenance of trails, fencing, and barnyard facilities.
  • Maintain awareness of the herd by memorizing the names of each horse and their corresponding riding proficiency levels.
  • Familiarity with the herd and daily monitoring for lameness, injuries, colic, etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced riding skills with horses of varied levels.
  • Reading and responding to horse signals and actions using safe and appropriate methods.
  • Deals with campers and other staff members with tact and courtesy, fostering positive relationships.
  • Must be able to work effectively in a stressful environment, communicate well with others, effectively deal with guests, and accept constructive criticism from supervisors.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Specific training and certification for Activity Area.
